The simplest way to explain them is to say they're basically essential oils from plants. Most people understand that essential oils offer distinct benefits or effects to the person using them. Essential oils are used in aromatherapy for calming, for opening of lungs and breathing passageways, for opening restricted blood vessels and for so many things. The essential oil and its related effect that readily comes to my mind is Lavender and its effect on one to make them sleepy. Lavender is used in baby products, pet products and even adult products to help induce sleepiness. But, is this truly what terpenes are?
Not quite. But, now that you understand the above explanation, it becomes easier to fully explain what terpenes are. Terpenes are the chemical compounds found WITHIN the essential oils that give each essential oil their aroma, their flavor and their effect. And, terpenes are found in almost every plant to some degree or another. The plants, flowers, and herbs get their scents, much of their flavorings and their medicinal or personal effect on people from terpenes.
There have been hundreds of terpenes identified so far. And, most plants have more than 1 terpene. For instance, within cannabis, over 100 different terpenes have been identified so far. Terpenes come from so many different plants: Pine Trees, Citrus Trees, Lavender. And, so, for example, from Pine Trees, we get Pinene. But, we also get Pinene from other plants, too, such as Cannabis. Pinene is the terpene that smells so "piney".
Pinene is known to be:
- An Anti-Inflammatory
- Bronchodialitor (opens passageways in the lungs)
- Helps Fight Short Term Memory Loss
- Enhances Attentiveness
It does all these things regardless of which plant it is extracted from.
Limonene is another very prevalent terpene, and is commonly found in citrus trees, plants, fruits and flowers. But, Limonene, like Pinene is also found in cannabis as well as many, many other plants.
Limonene is known to:
- Elevate Mood
- Alleviate Stress
- Function as an Antifungal
- Function as an Antibacterial
- Improves Absorption of Other Terpenes
Like Pinene, Limonene does all the things listed above regardless of which plant it is actually extracted from. So, "The Next Frontier" if you will, is said to be the use of Terpenes to help improve health of people and animals. Terpenes show huge promise in helping fight against virtually all health conditions known to man. Cancer, Epilepsy, Arthritis, PTSD....the list of things that terpenes can fight against is virtually unlimited. And, this is great news! Great because all the people who are having to take man made prescription medicine to get through their days may one day soon, be able to benefit from a natural cure that is easy on the body; that doesn't have to be made in a lab; is all natural; that doesn't cost an arm and a leg and require insurance and financial help. By knowing which terpenes (or terpene blends as the case may be) can help against any given health condition, a person will be able to administer treatment without having to visit a doctor and without having to get a prescription
This Next Frontier shows to hold HUGE PROMISE for all of us humans and animals. Stay tuned for more......
