Almost 40 million people in the US have arthritis and most of them turn to prescription and over-the-counter medications to relieve their pain. The side effects can often be unpleasant and can have long-term negative impacts on your body.

CBD oil has recently been used to help with the pain associated with arthritis with great success. Keep reading for more information on how you may be able use CBD oil for arthritis pain relief.

What is CBD Oil?

Most people are familiar with, or at least have heard of, THC, which is found in cannabis. THC is psychoactive and causes a feeling of being “high.” Cannabidiol (CBD), another major compound in cannabis, does not cause feelings of being high, and is often said to be non-psychoactive.

Many reports across the web state that CBD can reduce pain and inflammation. It is not psychoactive and does not have any impacts on your mental state.

CBD is a type of cannabinoid. Cannabinoids are chemicals found in cannabis plants. It is most often extracted from hemp plants, rather than marijuana plants. The difference between the two is that marijuana plants are bred to contain high levels of THC.

CBD Oil for Arthritis

Arthritis is the leading cause of disability in the US. There are two common types of arthritis:

  • Rheumatoid arthritis (RA), which is where your body attacks your joints, causing inflammation. It is common in the hands and feet and can lead to painful, stiff, and swollen joints.
  • Osteoarthritis (OA) is a degenerative disease that impacts your joint cartilage and bones, resulting in pain and stiffness. It can affect your hip, knee, and thumb joints.

CBD oil is often effective for rheumatoid arthritis because it activates your body’s natural receptors, like the vanilloid, adenosine and serotonin. When the TRPV-1 receptor is activated, CBD helps play a role in the inflammation response and pain perception.

Not only can CBD oil attach to receptors in your body, it can also cause your body to produce natural cannabinoids that attach to your CB2 receptors and reduce pain an inflammation in conjunction with hemp CBD.

The anti-inflammatory properties of CBD oil may also slow down or stop the progression of rheumatoid arthritis, which causes permanent damage over time and may reduce other inflammation-related symptoms of RA, like fatigue and fever.

What Does the Research Say?

Over the past decade, research has been conducted to examine the impacts of CBD oil on arthritis. Studies have found that users of CBD oil for RA had significantly less pain and also reported improved sleep. One of the biggest benefits aside from pain relief was that CBD oil had minimal, if any, side effects.

Most of the studies that have been conducted have used small samples, but all are promising. There is also a great deal of testimonial evidence from arthritis sufferers who tout the benefits of CBD oil.

How is CBD Oil for Arthritis Pain Used?

There are different ways you can use CBD oil and this will impact how quickly you notice any positive effects. On average, it takes about 5 to 90 minutes to notice any impacts of the CBD oil, depending on the method chosen. Vaping is almost immediate with shorter results. Eating/ingesting takes 45-90 minutes, and the effects tend to have an extended time frame.

Common ways to take CBD oil are in a capsule or liquid. You can take a capsule orally or add CBD oil to your food or water. You can also place a few drops of CBD oil under your tongue. For stiff and achy joints, you can even mix CBD oil with lotion, or order a CBD cream, and apply it to areas where you feel pain.

If you want to try something really creative, some companies offer CBD oil gum!

What Should I Be Looking For?

When choosing a CBD oil, there are a few things you should pay attention to.

First, you’ll want to make sure it’s from a trusted provider. You also should be clear about the CBD volume versus hemp volume. Avoid CBD oil with other type of questionable substances, like polyethylene glycol. Also be sure that if the CBD oil is extracted using ethanol or any other alcohol, that it has been tested for residual solvents.

You should also get the results from third-party lab testing to make sure you are getting a high quality CBD oil with an appropriate amount of CBD in the oil. Dosing should be based on the problem that you are looking to find relief from.

Most experts recommend starting with a lower dosage while you see how the CBD oil affects you. As you find that it is effective, you can increase your dose until you find one that works best for your situation.

The Bottom Line

You don’t have to live with the pain and inflammation caused by arthritis and you don’t have to turn to prescriptions or other medications to control the pain an inflammation. CBD oil is a natural (and legal!) alternative to these pain control methods.

Not only can CBD oil help reduce your pain an inflammation, it can also assist other symptoms of ill health at the same time. The benefits of CBD oil for arthritis far outweigh any negatives associated with it.
