What is the cost of CBD oil?

There are various sizes, strengths, and delivery methods to think about. And with so many choices, how can you determine what you are paying for?
CBD pricing is so variable because it is a new market. We have been selling CBD since 2013, and have seen the dramatic increase if product availability first hand. The majority of the companies have some sort of a one fluid ounce tincture that has 500mg of CBD.
With a little bit of math, one can find out what the true cost of their CBD is, and compare it to other products they may be looking at. This is a simple method that solely looks at the cost per milligram of CBD. It does not take into account other aspects of the product, like the use of organic ingredients, other vitamins, minerals, supplements, etc., and the type of extraction method used, among many other inputs that determine a products' cost.
Generally, today's retail value of a milligram of CBD can vary wildly from as low as $0.03/mg to upwards of $3.00/mg. Below, we will delve into the types of CBD products, and what we have found to be the average costs within those categories.
What Determines A Product Price?
The biggest determining factor of the cost of a CBD product, hands down, is the quality of the CBD hemp extract. Here are a few other major factors that can affect the cost of a product.
Origin of the Hemp
With the boom in the CBD market, many large farms are beginning to sprout up all over the place. This is great for those who are into mass production of products and operating under the economy of scale. You will get decent extract product from these farms. One thing that is generally missing from large commercial farms is the TLC the plants get from smaller boutique type farms.
Hemp is a resilient plant, and is not prone to pests and disease when grown properly. This leads many farms to utilize organic growing methods, and by not using chemical fertilizers, pesticides, and herbicides, the end product reflects that natural quality. The better the quality, the better the end product, and the higher the cost will be for the higher quality product.
Not all extraction methods are the same. CBD oil can be extracted from hemp in various ways. You will find in our industry that Supercritical CO2 extraction to be the most popular method of extraction. Other methods include steam distillation, solvent extraction (usually uses food grade ethanol), or hydrocarbon extraction (like butane, propane, n-tane, etc).
Equipment costs are considered. CO2 and ethanolic extraction equipment can be quite expensive to purchase. Hydrocarbon extraction can be fairly inexpensive to obtain. However, there will be a risk of residual solvents being found in hydrocarbon extracts if proper separation is not performed appropriately during processing.
The strength of a product, also called the potency, describes the amount of CBD in that particular product in comparison to the rest of the ingredients. The higher the potency, the more effective it may be for people who are in need of higher levels of CBD. For instance, while some people may do fine with a 250mg/fl oz tincture, others will thrive more with a tincture that contains 6000mg of CBD per fl oz.
When it comes to the higher potency products, many brands and manufacturers offer better pricing. Do keep that in mind, even if you are using small amounts of CBD, as that can help you keep your costs as low as possible.
There are a lot of products available that are very simple to produce, using solely the hemp extract and a carrier oil/capsule. By using simple ingredients, it is possible to keep costs down for the end user. However, incorporating other unique superfoods, herbs, spices, vitamins, and minerals may or may not affect the price of the end product.
For instance, obtaining organic ingredients will generally be more costly than purchasing non-organic alternatives. Some ingredients are difficult to source and are of superior quality, and this will drive the cost of the product up.
