You’ll also find in the Notes section some substitution ideas if you have a cat.

Why Lavender and Chamomile?
Lavender and chamomile are well-known for their gentle calming effects. Lavender has a soothing aroma that can ease anxiety and stress, while chamomile is often used for its mild sedative qualities. Together, they create a comforting blend that can help your dog unwind after a busy day.
Personal Experience
I started making and using these treats to help my mother-in-law with one of her dogs. Her dog consistently acted out, dug up plants, and was generally rowdy when it was time to go to bed. It isn’t that she didn’t exercise the pup enough, or that she was poorly trained. The pup was simply rowdy at inappropriate times, and having a calming treat on hand that was fast acting and effective was paramount in their lives.
Celebratory Events
Coming up in a few days of writing this is our country’s biggest celebration – Independence Day. In the not so distant past, we had a dog who was very sensitive to loud bangs. And dealing with Independence Day celebrations, especially here in Cheyenne, was quite challenging for him.
These treats helped him deal with the loud bangs and booms from fireworks quite well. He went from shaking in fear to calmly laying on the dog bed next to us, and we were grateful for this calming dog treat recipe.
Ingredients and Benefits
This recipe uses simple, natural ingredients that are easy on your dog’s digestive system. The grain-free base ensures it’s suitable for dogs with sensitivities or allergies. Alongside lavender and chamomile, the biscuits include nourishing elements like coconut flour and bacon fat, which support overall health and provide a tasty texture. And some ingredients can be substituted to better fit your pet’s palate.
For instance, instead of apple sauce, you could use canned pumpkin or sweet potato puree. Instead of eggs, you can use ‘flax eggs’. Bacon fat can be swapped with coconut oil. Oat flour in lieu of coconut flour. There is no one way to make these. However, the recipe I use for our pets is listed below.
Ingredients
- 1 cup coconut flour
- 1/2 cup plain apple sauce
- 2 large duck eggs
- 1/3 cup bacon fat
- 1/2 cup dried chamomile**
- 1/4 cup dried lavender**
- 12 grams CBD isolate
Instructions
Preheat the oven to 275° F, and lightly grease your baking tray.
Combine all ingredients into a single bowl, and mix very well to evenly distribute the CBD isolate. Don’t worry if the dough crumbles a bit, as that is normal. You could even add a little water, as needed, if it feels way too dry to hold in a ball shape. (I make 12 treats per batch, and often double or triple the batch to ensure I have a long lasting supply for my large dogs).
Form dough into balls and place onto baking sheet.
Bake for 45 minutes.
Remove from oven, and let cool completely before storing in an airtight container in a cool, dark place.
Notes
I have 4 large Labrador retrievers currently, and each treat using the ingredient table above will give each treat 100mg of CBD. If you have smaller or larger pets, you may wish to adjust the amount of CBD used in your recipe. I use a milligram per pound of weight, as each of my dogs are about 100lbs.
**If you have cats, you will want to skip adding the lavender to the recipe. And if you have not used chamomile with your feline and know that they react well to it, you might also want to skip that, as well, as some sources suggest that chamomile can be harmful in differing quantities. Some suggestions for alternative botanicals for cat calming treats are valerian root and calendula.
Serving Suggestions
Offer these biscuits as a calming treat about an hour before bedtime, or about an hour prior to Independence Day or New Years celebrations start popping off.
They make a great addition to your dog’s nightly routine, helping to ease restlessness and encourage relaxation. Always monitor your pet for any adverse reactions when introducing new treats.
By incorporating these lavender chamomile biscuits into your pet’s routine, you can support their well-being naturally and deliciously. Plus, making them at home means you know exactly what your pet is enjoying—free from unnecessary additives or preservatives.
