How to Use CBD Drops: The Sublingual 101

Jason Liss Jason Liss · Co-Founder & Chief Formulator · Sep 24, 2026 · 4 min read · ✓ 3rd-party tested

The 30-second version

  • Shake the bottle, fill the dropper to the line, and place the drops under your tongue.
  • Hold them there for 30–90 seconds, then swallow what’s left.
  • Once a day, same time each day. Connections: do it at the same moment as an existing habit.
  • Drops are the “faster-starting” end of the oral lineup — not stronger, just sooner, because part of the serving touches the mucous membranes under your tongue before the rest is swallowed.

Step by step

Step 1 — Shake the bottle

Hemp oil in an MCT base can settle. A quick 5-second shake before every use keeps each drop consistent with every other drop.

Step 2 — Draw a serving

Squeeze the bulb, let the dropper fill, and read your serving from the line/labels on the dropper. Your bottle’s label tells you what a “serving” is (for example, 1 mL, or a specific mg number). Trust the label over the eyeball.

Step 3 — Under the tongue

Squeeze the drops under your tongue. That’s the area with the most blood-vessel-filled tissue, which is why the classic technique is called sublingual.

Step 4 — Hold 30–90 seconds

Don’t swallow immediately. Swallowing right away just converts your drops to the slower, swallowed route. Give the tissue under your tongue roughly half a minute to do its thing, then swallow.

Step 5 — Same time every day

Morning, evening, whenever — the winning move is a fixed time. Drops are forgiving, but routines are what make them feel like part of your day instead of a to-do.

Step 6 — Keep notes for 1–2 weeks

Date, serving, time, anything you noticed. Adjust in small steps if you want to — and let your healthcare provider weigh in on anything that feels off.

What’s in the bottle

Label line What it means
Serving size The amount per serving (often 1 mL). Measure to it.
mg per serving Total hemp extract per serving (e.g., 500, 1000, 3000, 6000 mg ranges across the line).
Base oil Wellspring drops use an MCT oil base. That’s the carrier, not an active.
Spectrum Broad = 0.0% THC by formula · Full-spectrum = legal trace Delta-9 (≤0.3%) · Isolate = single molecule, THC-free
Third-party tested Every batch lab-tested; COA on every bottle.

More you’ll want to know

  • Not a fan of holding oil in your mouth? You can swallow drops plain or add them to food — but then you’ve switched to the swallowed route, so timing will be more gradual. Sublingual is the Wellspring recommended technique; swallowed is “acceptable but different.”
  • The cheek/gum note: when you hold a dropper under your tongue, the oil also wets your cheeks and gums. Those are the same kind of absorbing tissue — so the contact is a bonus, not a problem. The instruction stays simple: aim under the tongue.
  • Taste: full-spectrum drops carry a little more of the plant’s character; broad-spectrum and isolate formulas are milder. If the taste bugs you, a quick drink of water or juice afterward is fine.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long should I hold it under my tongue?

30 to 90 seconds is the standard window. More isn’t better; consistent is.

Should I take drops with food?

Drops can be taken morning, midday, or evening — whatever keeps your routine honest. If your stomach objects to an oil-first thing in the morning, move it 10 minutes into a meal.

Do drops go bad?

Kept cool and out of direct sunlight, they’re meant to last through normal use. Finish a bottle like a food product, not a heirloom.

How do I know if I’m “doing it right”?

You are. The technique is forgiving — the routine is the part to respect.
