How to Use CBD Vape Cartridges: The Inhaled Route, Made Simple

Jason Liss Jason Liss · Co-Founder & Chief Formulator · Sep 24, 2026 · 4 min read · ✓ 3rd-party tested

The 30-second version

  • Read the label once, up front — the mg per cartridge and the hemp-derived / THC note.
  • Screw the cartridge onto a compatible battery (most are 510-thread), start on a low or medium setting.
  • Take a slow, short draw — 2–3 seconds — inhale, pause, exhale. Small sips first; pace builds confidence, not clouds.
  • Keep the pen upright, cool, and dark when idle. Same time of day, a one-line log — the usual routine rules apply.

Step by step

Step 1 — Start with the label, not the habit

Before the first draw, read the cartridge’s label: total mg, the hemp-derived statement, and any THC note (full-spectrum / hemp-derived formulations may carry legal trace amounts ≤0.3%). This is spectrum information, not anxiety — the format behaves the same either way; you simply take them with the facts in view.

Step 2 — Attach and set the heat right

Most cartridges use a standard 510-thread connection: line it up and screw it hand-tight — snug, never forced. Start on a low or medium power setting. High heat is the enemy of a smooth vapor; low-and-slow is the civilized approach.

Step 3 — Slow, short draws

Take a slow draw of 2–3 seconds, inhale gently, pause, exhale. Start with one and see how you feel before reaching for another. There’s no fullness contest; the technique is “small and repeatable,” not “big and one-and-done.”

Step 4 — Store it like it’s a small tool

Stand the pen upright when it’s not being used, keep it out of heat and direct sun, and keep the connection clean (a dry cotton swab occasionally). A vape that’s cared for behaves predictably, which is the whole point.

Step 5 — Same pace, same time, keep a note

Consistency is the recurring theme of this entire category. Pick a time of day, keep the same pace, and log it: date, time, how much, anything you noticed. One or two weeks of notes is the difference between “trying it” and “knowing your own response.”

The route, in one honest line

Inhaled is the third route in the family. Swallowed products travel the digestive journey (Route B); sublingual drops touch the mouth’s membranes (Route A). A vape’s vapor is inhaled — it travels the airways into the lungs, where the moist lining and the tiny air sacs (alveoli) sit close to dense blood vessels. That same mechanism is shared by any inhaled format — vapes, flower, dabs — and it’s why those formats produce their character more quickly than a swallowed one. Timeline language only: sooner, not stronger.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it the same as “smoking”?

No — a cartridge produces vapor, not smoke, and there’s no burning involved. That’s a mechanism difference, and it’s also why the storage and heat guidance matters.

How much should I draw?

Two-to-three-second slow draws, starting at one and pacing from there. The log is where you’ll find your own comfortable rhythm.

Do these contain THC?

Some do, at legal trace or labeled levels (hemp-derived Delta-8/Delta-10 blends and full-spectrum formulas). Read the label’s THC note and know your own position before you buy, not after.

Anyone who shouldn’t use inhaled products?

Anyone with respiratory conditions, or who’s pregnant or nursing, should ask their healthcare provider before using any inhaled product. When in doubt, a provider is the person to ask.
