How to Use CBD Balms & Topicals: The Surface Route, Made Simple

The 30-second version

  • Start with clean, dry skin — the surface you apply to is the whole point.
  • Squeeze or scoop a small serving (a pea to a nickel, depending on the jar), warm it between your fingertips.
  • Rub it in gently in circles over the area you actually want it on, then let it do its quiet thing.
  • Wash your hands, close the jar, store it out of direct sun. Same spot, roughly the same time — that’s the routine.

Step by step

Step 1 — Start with clean, dry skin

A balm, salve, or lotion is a surface product: it goes where you put it. Clean and dry the area first so the product contacts skin, not leftover lotion or dampness. This is the topical version of “shake the bottle” — it’s the consistency move, not a ceremony.

Step 2 — Measure by feel, not by fear

Balms and salves come in jars (scoop with two fingertips), creams and lotions come in pots or pumps (a small squeeze). A pea-to-nickel serving is the friendly starting range for most areas; the label’s serving line, if it has one, beats the eyeball. Warm the balm briefly between your fingertips so it spreads more easily.

Step 3 — Rub it in where it’s needed

Apply gently in small circles over the spot you bought it for — a shoulder, a knee, lower back, hands. Don’t scrub, don’t layer on a fistful. Topicals work on the surface where applied; layering more than your skin will comfortably absorb is just leftover product. Keep it off broken skin, and out of your eyes and mouth.

Step 4 — Wash up, then let it sit

Wash your hands after applying so the product doesn’t travel. The jar closes, goes back in a cool, shaded spot (a sunny windowsill is the enemy of a good balm, same as a good gummy), and the area you applied to is left alone to do its thing.

Step 5 — Same place, same time, keep a note

Topicals reward a repeating habit the same way everything else in the category does: same area, roughly the same moment of your day, and a one-line note in your log (date, where, how much, anything you noticed). Two weeks of honest notes beat a week of guessing.

Reading your label, quickly

On the label What it means
Total mg (e.g., 12,000 mg) Hemp extract per jar — the whole container, not per serving
Serving / application How much to use per go, when the label specifies one
Broad spectrum 0.0% THC by formula
Full spectrum Contains legal trace Delta-9 (≤0.3%)
Carrier base Coconut/olive oil + beeswax (balms/salves) or a lighter emulsion (creams/lotions)
Third-party tested Every batch is lab-tested; COA on every jar

Frequently Asked Questions

How much should I use?

A pea to a nickel per area is the friendly starting range. Start small, note it, adjust in small steps.

Do I need to massage it in hard?

No. Gentle circles are the instruction. Firm rubbing is fine, scrubbing isn’t necessary.

Will a topical act like a swallowed product?

No — this is the route difference. A topical is applied to the skin and does its work where it’s applied; it isn’t swallowed, so it doesn’t follow the digestive journey at all. That’s a route-of-administration fact, not a strength comparison.

Is it safe on sensitive skin?

Start with a small patch (inside of the wrist or elbow) and see how your own skin responds. If anything feels off, stop and ask your provider or the label’s cautions.

Good places to start

Prefer the deeper story?

  • The bigger topical picture — formats, carriers, and how to choose:
  • The two routes explainer — topicals use the one route neither drops, capsules, nor gummies use (the skin, not the digestive tract):
  • How the application step looks inside the body — the skin cross-section: *
